Inova Alexandria Hospital is a 318-bed community hospital that offers a full range of healthcare services and has received national recognition for healthcare excellence. The hospital is dedicated to continually expanding health care programs and services to help ensure we meet the healthcare needs of the communities we serve today and in the future.
 
The vision for Alexandria's community hospital began in 1872 with one person, Julia Johns, and it continues today. For more than 135 years, Inova Alexandria Hospital has provided high-quality medical care and innovative technology. During rich history, the hospital continuously enhanced facility and services to offer the latest treatments and technologies, earning us recognition for many "firsts" in patient care.

In 1872, Julia Johns and other community members formed the Alexandria Infirmary Association, which later became Alexandria Hospital, the first full-service hospital in Northern Virginia. In 1894, the Nurses Training School was established. By 1900, a dispensary was opened, marking the beginning of outpatient care. Sixty years later in 1961, Alexandria Hospital set the standard in emergency medicine by becoming the first hospital to staff its emergency department with full-time physicians 24 hours a day. In 1962, the hospital moved to its current location on Seminary Road. It occupied five sites previous to this move. In March 1997, Alexandria Hospital became part of Inova Health System.
